Think Twice

Photo not mine
Are you compromising? Doing it your way? Insisting your own timeline? Well... Think twice!

“Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future. Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.”
Proverbs 19:20-21 ESV

Great God

He is a great God.
He is an awesome, wonderful God.
Mighty in power, author of wisdom.
Better than life.

One of my favorite worship songs. I like this song because the adjectives used by Ptr. Archie Castillo in describing God really fits how I experience and consider HIM in my life.

I pray that every word used to describe God in this song will not be a cliche and that as we sing this song to God, we will also meditate on each lines and declare God's power over our lives. I pray that this will not be just a song that we sing with the crowd but also our individual song and declaration of Faith in God, which should be evident in our daily lives.

Indeed, He is a Great God!

Never Give Up

Today, during Leaders Huddle with Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) students, we've shared our highlights and low moments for the week. After hearing from everyone, we all agreed that God's message for the team is "Never Give Up!".

Aside from the team's visions and objectives, we have our individual goals too. Each of us may be facing different temptations and challenges everyday yet God is ever faithful and patient that He even encouraged us not to quit. We were reminded to fix our eyes on Jesus and throw off anything that can distract and stop us to succeed.

Before we ended in prayer, this verse came to mind,

2 Corinithians 12: 8-9 (NLT)
Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.

We can continue and not give up because God is there, He is enough to keep us going. His grace is all we need. Once we become humble to accept our weaknesses and surrender all our struggles to God, He becomes our strength. His power works best in us as we depend on Him. There is indeed no reason to give up!

Be Still

“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” (Psalms 46:10 NLT)

May this verse be an encouragement to all! He's asking us to keep the faith and not be shaken. God is in control!

Thank You, Lord! You are amazing! Another Blessed Day for us! :)

Not Your Buddy

I'm reposting this article I've read from boundless.org written by Suzanne Hadley Gosselin. I believe that most single men and women can relate to this at some point.

Close male-female friendships can be fun and engaging, but are women putting their emotions at risk?

The other day I was having lunch with a friend, and she began to pour out an all-too-familiar story. The guy she'd been hanging out with four nights a week, the one who'd made her a jazz mix CD and asked her to be his date to his office Christmas party, the one who'd gone to late-night movies with her and made her pasta — that guy — had crushed her hopes (again) with a single, nonchalant statement: "I don't see myself in a relationship anytime soon."

I tried to reassure my friend that the guy probably thought she was beautiful and fabulous and smart but had just made a choice to be single for now.

"But we have such a great connection," she moaned. "We're such good friends!"

I felt anger well up. This was not the first time I'd heard this story. I could count nearly half a dozen friends who found themselves in this same frustrating situation. After investing months in late-night talks, meals together and flirty emails, each woman faced the sad reality that the guy actually wasn't planning to upgrade their friendship to, well, marriage.

It's Not Our Fault!

I decided to discuss this trend with a few of my guy friends. I specifically targeted Brad, whose boyish good looks and abundance of charm had lured in more than one hopeful woman and gained him a reputation as a heartbreaker.

"Do you think it's wrong for a guy to initiate one-on-one time with a woman when he has no intentions with her?" I asked.

My friend paused, savoring the question. "I think," he said, "if a woman wants something to be there, she's going to see something there."

His buddies smirked knowingly.

"But don't you think seeking her out and spending time with her encourages it?" I prodded.

"She's the one who's choosing to view that as special treatment," he said, shrugging his shoulders. "It's her interpretation."

"Can you tell when a girl's interested in you?"

"Usually."

"Then why would you lead her on like that?"

"She's free to say no anytime. Until then, I'll assume she's OK with it."

By "OK," I guessed he meant the girl could handle it emotionally.

His buddies slapped him on the back.

"That's right," one of them piped up. "Women are always going to read into something. If you catered to it, you'd have to give up female friends completely."

Mutually Exclusive

The most helpful book I never read was a little relationship book called He's Just Not That Into You. The title alone provided the answer to a decade's old inner struggle I've had. You know, the one that causes a single female to hope a relationship will develop out of a friendship despite a complete absence of evidence of the fact.

In her book Relationships, former college professor Dr. Pamela Reeve discusses three levels of friendships: acquaintances, companions and intimate friends. Dr. Reeve observes that men and women cannot sustain an intimate friendship without one or the other harboring romantic expectations. She recommends that men and women avoid being intimate friends outside of courtship and marriage.

Companions, she says, generally spend less than two hours together a week. When a man indicates he would like to see the woman more than that, but claims they are "just friends," he sends a mixed message.

Dr. Reeve writes: "One party can selfishly enjoy all the benefits of a relationship, the warmth and relief from loneliness, the satisfaction of the attention that feeds the ego — all without the accompanying commitment. One party luxuriates, while the other party feels cheated and is left with deep unsatisfied longings."

I've recently observed several non-dating relationships that seem to fall into the "intimate friends" category. In every case, it is the woman who is paying the price emotionally. Why? When a guy starts investing his heart, he can do something about it by making a move. And if the girl rejects him, the friendship ends or changes significantly. A woman, however, can hang on in this kind of relationship indefinitely, hoping the guy will eventually share her feelings. She makes herself available to him as a "friend," all the while hoping the friendship will blossom into something more.

Unfortunately, even if the guy senses the woman's interest, like my friend Brad, he has not made a direct offer to her and therefore feels no obligation to clear up the matter. Maybe we could chalk that up to communication differences between men and women: A man may be oblivious to unspoken signs that he has been placed in the "future husband" category. What he may be viewing as an innocent dinner, she sees as an indication that the friendship is developing into more. But men should assume that if a woman is spending a lot of time with him, she is interested and she is investing her emotions. (I suspect men realize this more often than they'll admit, but hold onto these ego-boosting relationships anyway.)

Women, on the other hand, need to assume less. A woman should not assume that a guy friend she's spending time with is: a) just too shy to make a move; b) thinking she's the woman of his dreams but the timing isn't right; c) in denial of God's will that they be together.

We get it. A woman loves to read into a guy's every action. That's her relational crime. But the guy does her a disservice by allowing her to be his "buddy girl" — a female friend who provides the relational benefits without the commitment.

In his article "Physical Intimacy and the Single Man," Matt Schmucker points out that men defraud their sisters when they indulge in this type of relationship. "Simply put," he writes, "a man defrauds a woman when, by his words or actions, he promises the benefits of marriage to a woman he either has no intention of marrying or if he does, has no way of finally knowing that he will."

Single men and women are failing each other. Uncommitted intimate friendships may satiate immediate needs, but they lead to frustration and heartache. Not to mention, for singles ready for marriage, these "friendships" waste time and energy.

Stepping Back

Men and women who find themselves in a dead-end friendship, should take responsibility. A woman is responsible to be wise with her heart. Solomon said, "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life" (Proverbs 4:23). If a woman feels her heart longing for a man who's not pursuing her, indulging those feelings is unwise.

Song of Songs puts it this way, "Do not awaken love before it so desires." As a generation of women drunk on chick flicks, we want romance to happen so badly we allow ourselves to fantasize about relationships that have no founding.

About a year ago, my sister, a college junior, was receiving regular phone calls from Nick, a guy friend who had transferred to another school. During their conversations he would shower her with compliments, ask her what she was looking for in a guy and talk about taking her out to dinner at a fancy restaurant when he visited. At the same time, he congratulated her for being the only girl he could really talk to who wouldn't "get the wrong idea."

Despite her desire to be that exception, Sarah found herself increasingly confused by Nick's attention. She realized she was beginning to entertain romantic thoughts. After seeking counsel, Sarah decided she needed to cut back on her interactions with Nick to protect her heart.

During their next phone conversation, she explained how she felt. Nick admitted he wasn't interested in her as more than a friend, but he seemed shocked and offended that Sarah wanted to back off.

Just as a woman should take measures to guard her heart in relationships, a guy should seek to protect the emotions of his female friends. Paul instructed Timothy to treat young women "as sisters with absolute purity." I can say this from experience — you never have to wonder if your brother is romantically interested in you.

I have interacted with guys who are genuine and friendly without making me wonder if they want me to have their children. Like a good dance partner, the guy gently eases me to a place where I understand he considers me a friend only. We may engage in a meaningful friendship, but he does not give false signals by inviting me to dinner, emailing me daily or initiating extended time together. While these actions are fine if the guy is interested, they are misleading if he's not.

Make Room for Romance
Ecclesiastes croons, "There is a time for love." If, as a woman, you are indulging in an intimate friendship with a man who is not pursuing you, you are accepting a cheap imitation of love. And by spending all your time with a guy who will never put a ring on your finger, you may miss a potential suitor.

If, as a man, you are spending large quantities of time with a woman, you may want to consider if perhaps the relationship is deserving of an upgrade to an intentional relationship that explores the possibility of matrimony. If not, do your sister the courtesy of making your stance clear, freeing her to be pursued by another man.

Above all, if you find yourself in an intimate friendship with someone of the opposite sex, ask the Lord for wisdom and discernment. Describing the complexity of relationships, Dr. Reeve uses the words of a poster she once read:
Involvement with people is always a very delicate thing....
It requires real maturity to get involved and not get all messed up.

"Never," she concludes, "is this more true than in relationships between men and women."

I couldn't agree more with the good doctor. When it comes to male-female relationships, lacking intent, the buddy system is a bad idea.

All About Him

A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense. (Proverbs 19:11 NIV)

I believe all of us needs to be reminded of this verse. These two - being impatient and being sensitive - are most likely being used by the enemy to attack us. As soon as we feel these, everything else becomes blurry, unstable, and out of control.

Let's ask God everyday for wisdom on how to become patient and ask for outpouring grace not to get offended!

It is not about us anyway, it is all about God. His plans, His will, His glory.

Keep On Dreaming

Reminder For The Day!

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future". (Jeremiah 29:11)

This verse has somewhat became a cliche to most people. But this morning, it gave another meaning to me and some friends. As I was asking God for a Word that I could share to the LifeBox Caloocan staff, God impressed this verse to me including this question - Have you guys stopped dreaming after hearing your call?

We all have our own specific calling (aside from our general call to share the gospel). For us in LifeBox, it is to go full-time in the ministry of reaching the next generation for Christ. For some, it could be working in the corporate world and be a living testimony of God's love to his colleagues, or maybe to manage his own business and be a channel of God's blessings to other people. I'm sure there's a long list for that. Yet, once we get to know what our calling is, what do we do next? Of course, we will do our best to fulfill our call, then what?

Let us be reminded to keep on dreaming. As what it says in Jeremiah, God has great plans ahead of us. He has plans to prosper us so we keep on going. We don't stop dreaming. We should continue dreaming big not just for ourselves but also for our families, our friends, our colleagues and for everyone around us. Let us all be excited and hopeful for that promised future which He has planned for us! :)

Not Alone

Reminder For The Day!

“The Lord is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him. The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is his name." (Exodus 15:2, 3 NIV)

We don't fight alone. God fights with us that's why we are secured and confident that we will win every battle and every challenge which tries to stop us from living a victorious life.

Abundant Life

Reminder For The Day

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." (John 10:10 ESV)

Let's not allow the enemy to distract us and steal our joy. Let's declare God's power over our lives instead, and fight for His great plans for us!  Good night! God loves us no matter what!

2011 Highlights

God definitely blessed me again this year. He has been so faithful and loving.

As I look back through my Facebook, planner and phone calendar, I can't stop thanking HIM for all the blessings and blessings-in-disguise. I am just so amazed on how gracious He is despite all my short-comings.

This year, God made sure that we're together in every step and decision I make, He made sure that everything I do would be pleasing to His sight, He made sure that I give importance to things with eternal value, He made sure that I realize what's important for Him, He made sure that I get to appreciate the simple things in life, He made sure that I learn to value every relationship He's giving me, He made sure that my faith in Him becomes stronger and unshakable...

I can just keep on talking on how God made sure He's with me this year. He made sure I become a person who knows that this life is all about HIM. So many revelations overwhelmed me and I thank Him for keeping me sane.

He gave me lots of new great friends and some old friends He allowed to stay, He gave me a new career which I know is just a preparation for His greater plans for me, He gave me an opportunity to lead people to follow Him which hurt and challenged me at times yet His plan to mold my character was fulfilled through it. Oh... Purpose

I was chatting with a friend few hours ago and as we were discussing about issues and disagreements in life and Church, he asked me, "Kayo po, what is your purpose bilang Christian??? pwede po bang malaman" ("How about you, May I know your purpose as a Christian?").

That question made me wonder and ask other friends this survey question, "What is your purpose as a person/ Christian?" (around 2 'til 3 in the morning via Facebook, Yahoo Messenger & SMS). Some chose not to answer, some said that their brain is not functioning anymore, some said they're busy and some took my question seriously. With their permission, I'm sharing their answers here:

Sarah Abigail: "mainly to make sure other people know about God and what Jesus did."

Jay Primo: "live, be a role model in a good way."

Amanda: "Hmm... I'm not a hundred percent sure on what my PURPOSE is. I never thought about it really. I just know I have goals and that I want to see them through."

Dennis: "ahmmmm... to love & be loved."

Gold: "First thing that came to mind is my role in this life. I know that I am being prepared to put up a school one day. To serve in the field of education with high hopes of contributing higher level of learning for our children. In the process, there are a lot of situation where unknowingly my weaknesses and strengths inspire people. I just try to walk with my faith all the time."
Additonal comment: "Nobody have asked me that question before..."

Jay: "To be used by God as a blessing... one way or another."

Fhe: "Practically as a normal person iisipin mo to have a normal life, simple lang, basta masaya. To help, to be good and syempre makilala mo na may Diyos. Mahirap mabuhay ng walang takot sa Diyos. For sure nagkagulo na mundo." ("Practically as a normal person you will think of having a normal life, simple yet happy. To help, to be good and of course to know that there is God. It's hard to live without fear in God. For sure it'll be a chaotic world.")

Ryan: "hmm... To love and serve the Lord."

Debbie: "To be able to use my abilities/ talent/ resources to help others and be a blessing as well."

Peter: "A person to direct them on what needs to be done at work and in life; as a Christian, to lead them to God towards the right way, to the truth and to the life."

Of course, before asking them, I first gave an answer to my friend's question.

Joice: "Ay ako? (Oh, me?) My purpose as a Christian is to honor God in everything I do and to spread the gospel to others. The good news that God sent His son, Jesus Christ, to die for all my sins and resurrected to give me salvation. That's my main purpose so pag may mga kaguluhan sa paligid ko na hindi ko maintindihan at mga argumento sa paligid... I always go back to my purpose. (That's my main purpose so if there's any conflicts and arguments which I don't understand... I always go back to my purpose.)"

How about you? Care to share your purpose?

This Bible verse might help you answer... Romans 11:36 - For from Him and through Him and for Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.

JOICE, THE JOYFUL MYSTERY

I saw this again and wanted to share this Note posted on Facebook by Mr. Ruben Velarde last July 2010. Thanks again, Ben! Really touched and grateful for this! :)

---
There is this one lady that I always admire from the distance. She may appear fragile, a delicate lady that you thought you need to protect all your life but once she gets to open her mouth and hear her talk, you know in an instant that she has what it takes to rule the world. A petite lady with a huge personality, she never fails to make her presence felt effortlessly the moment she walks her way amidst the crowd. She smiles like it was only meant for you. She talks with you like you are the only person that matters to her. Whenever she passes, I would always wonder what it’s like to be close to her. What it's like to share intimate secrets with her that you know it will be protected the way she protects herself.

Funny, but I did dare attempt to offer my friendship once. I smiled at her, greeted her yet all I got was a nonchalant smile and probably one that she can hardly remember. Yet that didn’t lessen my admiration for her. Every time that she would pass my way, I would simply follow her with my eyes until she blended with the rest. Then I again would wonder to myself what it’s like to be close to her.

Whenever I pass by her station, I can see her attentively focused and immersed on her work and she never noticed that I would stare at her with unrelenting appreciation. And then again I would wonder to myself what’s like to be close to her.

Probably she knows me by my name all because I figured out in a few call quality issues. But that name does not go with the face that she can recall. Probably she hated me at one instance because an issue associated with me challenged her. I don’t know… all I know is I look up to her like a powerful goddess standing on her pedestal.

Joice… that’s how she is fondly called by all those people familiar to her. Every time I would hear somebody calls her name, I would turn my head and look around where she would be coming from or where she would be heading to. I never fail to admire her from a distance. And then again I would wonder to myself what’s like to be close to her.

a pretty face with a gorgeous smile

The Power Of A Praying Woman

"Prayer is powerful - but do you know how to pray for yourself?

It may seem easier to pray for your spouse, your children, your friends, and your extended family, but God wants to hear your requests for your life too. He loves it when you come to Him for the things you need and ask Him to help you become the woman you have always longed to be."

My friend, Alexie, gave this book last October 2007 as her birthday gift for me. I opened this again last week for my daily devotion. That night, I asked God to open my heart for whatever He wants to tell me before I sleep. A lot of truths were revealed again to me just by reading the first few pages and here's one part which really spoke to me...

And whenever you are disappointed because your needs are not being met, talk to yourself and say, "My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from HIM" (Psalm 62:5). Then tell God about all your needs and everything that is in your heart. ...He is just waiting to hear it from you.

I guess it is true that praying for others is easier sometimes, especially when they share specific requests to you. Of course, I do pray for my needs everyday but God is so great for He reminded me that it is better to tell Him every desire of my heart and be specific about it. And that's what He really wants me to do! =)

This book, I recommend to all women who wants to be drawn closer to God and know His plans and purposes for her life as she receives comfort and strength from Him each day. A total of 30 chapters and at the end of each chapter are these 2 very inspiring sections: "My Prayer to God" and "God's Promises To Me".

Be Blessed! :)

Young Women On The Journey

I usually read a story or 2 before going to bed as part of my Daily Devotion/ Quiet Time with God. Most of the stories really touched me as I always ask God to speak to me through the stories I read and Bible verses linked to them.

This book is a compilation of Testimonies of young women & their journey through life. There are a total of 77 stories and I've already read 53 of them. I recommend this book to all ladies (and gentlemen)... Discover the questions that these young women have asked, and find answers for your own.

I'm sharing this passage from one of the stories I recently read from this book. That night, I prayed and asked God to open my heart for whatever HE wants to tell me (as I always do)... and when I started reading, I was overwhelmed and so touched with HIS message...

"I realized that all the success in the world is meaningless if it bears no eternal value. Now I have just one simple desire: to love God and spend my entire life loving Him by ministering to other people, whatever it takes." - Jodi Darcen (one of the contibutors).

Proverbs 31:29 says, "Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all."

God bless us all! :)

Second Half

Here are more photos from my 2010. So many blessings that it gave me a hard time to choose which can best represent each month. I love all the photos in my albums and I treasure every person & moment captured (even if it's not posted here)! I can't thank God enough for all the blessings he has given me!

I love you, Lord!

God bless us all! :)

First Half

I decided to count my many blessings for this year through my pictures. I had mixed emotions and was teary-eyed as I look at them... so amazed with how God loves me as He guided me throughout the year.

My original plan was to post one photo/ highlight for each month but as I reminisce with the pictures, I wanted to post them all! Haha! It's really hard to choose the best photo for the month since every shot is special. Now, I'm posting four for each. Whew! =D

These are photos of people, events, places that made my year fruitful, colorful and exciting... God is great!

Time Flies

Two sweet dreams left and we will all wake up to a New Year! :)

I love calendars... I love looking at calendars... putting marks on them to start my countdowns!

Maybe because I am always hopeful and excited for what God has in store for me each day. He never fails to surprise me with His blessings (& blessings in disguise). =D

Another year is ending soon and my prayer is for God to guide me again and again as He gives me a grateful heart, that I won't end a single day without thanking and praising Him no matter how amazed I am with how time flies.

God bless us all! :)
